know us better than we do?

Until we forget everything…
MUTOPIA is a most spontaneous webseries / shortfilm about FUTURE & SOCIETY! A fascinating study of logic, memory, intelligence, creativity and incompetence.
By turns grotesk, surprising, colorful and absurd, it is an inspiring modern-day fairytale – in a unique comic-animation look.
A poetic contemporary art-fiction in a unique comic animation look
To emphasize themes of virtuality and artificial memory, the makers of Mutopia used a special visual effect to bring out a unique comic animation look that transforms the live-action footage into an animated dream world.
„this comic look enhances not only the viewers experience of the film, but becomes part of the storytelling process.
MUTOPIA uses a special visual comic animation effect
The use of a special visual effect transformes live action footage into a comic animation and turns MUTOPIA into a “visual novel” about logic, memory, infinity, creativity and incompetence.
„When I saw it for the first time, this animation effect really triggered something in me. And I found it would work well for this type of film“
The surreal and alternative worlds in Mutopia refer to virtuality, dreams and artificial memory. Topics that are intensified and visualized by the comic animation look.
„It also creates a real emotional effect and helped me to smoothly bring together all that footage – that animation look was very effective and helped to give the audience a buzz of a dreamlike parallel universe!“
Producer Mat Branger admits that they didn’t exactly conceptualize this from the beginning. Altough we actually were inspired by drawings and comic books & films from the start, the actual comic animation look was discovered as a surprise and added later in postproduction.
„In the production of MUTOPIA, we had to improvise a lot. So we were forced to invent – and discover – many things instantly during the process. The whole production was an extremely spontaneous process!“Mat Branger, Producer
